Best Bowling Shammy (2026)
A straight comparison for UK bowlers
The best bowling shammy for most UK bowlers is a leather one, because leather soaks up lane oil where microfibre tends to move it around. After that it comes down to size, sides and price. A hand-sized pad such as the RocketBilly at £13.95 or the Kaizen at £20.00 is enough for wiping between shots.
We make the Kaizen Bowling Shammy, so we have kept this guide to facts you can check, with sources at the bottom.

What a Shammy Does
Bowling lanes are oiled, and some of that oil ends up on your ball every shot. A shammy wipes it off before the next delivery, so the ball meets the lane in the same state each time.
Brunswick's own ball care chart says to wipe with a shammy between shots and to use a proper ball cleaner after bowling. Those are two separate jobs, and only the first is allowed during a game. The USBC rule further down sets out exactly what you can and cannot do once competition has started.

One wipe as the ball comes back, before the next delivery.
Leather or Microfibre
Leather shammies and microfibre towels both wipe a ball. They behave differently with oil.
Leather has a nap that holds oil. Genesis says the nap of its buffalo leather absorbs oil and dirt better than cotton, microfibre or other towels, and Hammer's Amazon listing says its leather pad removes dirt and oil better than microfibre. Those are manufacturers' claims rather than independent tests, and our own listing makes the same claim for Kaizen's buffalo leather. Take them for what they are.
Microfibre is cheap, soft and easy to wash. It is a fine towel for your hands or for wiping dust off. A saturated microfibre towel can push oil back onto the ball instead of removing it, so if you use one, swap it for a clean one before it is wet through.
Leather fills up too. A leather shammy that has soaked up a few sessions of oil stops lifting oil as well as it did. Washing it brings it back, which is why the care section below matters as much as the material.
Buffalo leather is the thicker option, and the argument for thickness is simply that there is more material to soak oil into before the pad needs washing. Genesis lists its buffalo leather Pure Pad at 6 mm and calls 3 to 4 mm the industry standard, though that benchmark is Genesis's own and we could not find an independent source for it. The Kaizen shammy measures 6.2 mm on digital calipers, so it sits in the same bracket as the Pure Pad. Those are the only two figures in this guide you can compare directly, because no other maker here publishes a thickness at all.

Which Should You Buy?
The cheapest decent leather pad in the UK
The RocketBilly at £13.95 is the lowest price we found. It is a 21 × 17 cm leather pad, and Tenpin Shop says it washes with soap and warm water.
A hand-sized buffalo leather pad
Kaizen at £20.00. At 21 × 18 cm it is the largest hand-pad in the table where a size is actually listed. The Genesis Pure Pad is buffalo leather too and is smaller, at 18 × 15 cm.
The thickest pad you can get
Genesis makes a 9 mm Pure Pad HD, sold at around $22 by US retailers, but it ships from the States. In the UK the Kaizen at 6.2 mm is the thickest pad here with a published figure.
You bowl in the US
Kaizen sells its accessories in the UK only for now. Genesis and Storm are the easiest to find over there.

One honest caveat from us. At 21 × 18 cm this is a palm-sized pad, not a large towel. If you want something you can fold or wrap around the ball, it is smaller than that.
How to Use a Shammy Between Shots
The USBC rule decides what you can do during a league game or tournament. Rule 18 says that once competition starts, a ball cannot be cleaned with any liquid or cleaning agent, and cannot have powder, rosin or any other foreign material on it. If a foreign substance gets on the ball and a dry towel will not remove it, you can use an approved cleaner only with consent from a league or tournament officer. A dry shammy is fine. Competition starts when any bowler throws a ball for score.
UK leagues set their own rules on top of that, so check yours before you assume.

Keep it dry, and wipe the whole surface rather than just the track.
- 01
Wipe the ball with the dry shammy when it comes back, before you pick it up.
- 02
Use both sides, and wipe the whole surface rather than just the track.
- 03
Keep the shammy dry. If you cleaned your ball with a liquid before the game, let the shammy dry before you use it in competition.
- 04
Do not pat the ball with rosin or powder after wiping. Rosin goes on your hand only.
- 05
Save the liquid ball cleaner for after you finish bowling.
How to Wash and Dry a Shammy
Wash it when it stops lifting oil as well as it did, or when it starts to feel slick.
- 01
Wet it with warm water and work in a little mild soap. Our listing says mild soap and warm water.
- 02
Rinse until no soap is left and press the water out.
- 03
Lay it flat to dry. Storm's retailer guidance says air dry and no tumble dryer, and Genesis says lay it flat.
- 04
Once it is dry, brush the nap with a soft brush if it feels flat. Genesis recommends a bristle brush for its buffalo leather.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a leather shammy better than a microfibre towel for a bowling ball?
For wiping oil off between shots, bowling brands generally say yes. Leather has a nap that holds the oil, and a wet microfibre towel can push oil around instead. Microfibre is still fine for dry wiping and for your hands.
Can I use a shammy during a league game?
Yes, if it is dry. USBC Rule 18 bans liquid cleaners, powder and rosin on the ball once competition starts, but a dry towel or shammy is allowed. Check your own league's rules too.
Can I use ball cleaner on the ball during a game?
Not under USBC rules. Once competition starts you cannot clean a ball with a liquid or cleaning agent. If something stuck on the ball will not wipe off with a dry towel, ask a league or tournament officer for consent before using an approved cleaner.
How often should I wash my shammy?
When it stops removing oil as well as it did. That depends on how much you bowl and how oily the lanes are. Wash it with mild soap and warm water and let it dry flat.
What size should a bowling shammy be?
Most hand-pads in the table are between 18 × 15 cm and 21 × 18 cm. A size that fits your palm lets you wipe the whole ball in a few passes. Kaizen's is 21 × 18 cm.
Can I buy the Kaizen shammy in the US?
Not at the moment. Kaizen Bowling sells its accessories in the UK only for now, through Amazon.co.uk. Genesis and Storm are the closest US options.

Wiping oil off the ball is one half of a consistent release. The other half is what your thumb is doing inside it.
Best Bowling Thumb Tape (2026)Track What Your Ball Is Doing
If your ball reaction changes from game to game, the cause is the ball, the lane or you. Keeping the ball clean rules out the first one. For the other two you need a record.
If you would rather keep everything digital and see a full range of stats at the press of a button, the KB App is the right choice for you. It tracks shot quality, spare conversion and pocket accuracy every game, so you can see which of the three it actually was.
